or if you particularly like sound, I made the above audio-essay as a self-introduction to my master's program in the summer of 2011, and it's still pretty accurate (although not entirely redundant with the brief bio below.)
IF YOU DO LIKE TEXT
I was born in 1989 and farted around childhood and the internet for some 18 years before attending Stanford University
. While pursing my B.S. in Symbolic Systems
, which interdisciplinary study of consciousness involved philosophy, psychology, linguistics, computer science and (particularly for me) no small amount of interface design, I realized that I was far less interested in "advancing my field" or "starting a company", than I was in engaging with people about the broader human issues
my studies brought up. I also realized that datavisualizations
were a very big part of the very exciting future of journalism and I wanted to start making them as well as I possibly could. So I tacked on an M.A. in Journalism
, and graduated in June 2012
. Until recently, I put my skills to use fighting the corruptive influence of money on politics
with the good people at MapLight
I've also been up to many skill-and-character-and-career-building-very-professional-sounding things besides, and if you're really interested in everything I can do (illustrator! video! poetry! portuguese! janis joplin impressions!), please, look at my resume. Over there.
